For the Holy Knight game, I had done a good bit of historical research I forgot to add to my blog. I'll add it here now. Following are the pictures I used as reference images, dimensions, etc.
This panorama really helped me get some sense of scale.
I also checked out some books from the library going over Italian architecture, church building, and the book Brunelleschi's Dome: How a Renaissance Genius Reinvented Architecture.
It was hard to find dimensions for the church, other than a few for the floor plan. I had to do a lot of scale checking by comparing things to the average human height. Overall, it worked pretty well -- although I think the game might have benefited being smaller than reality, because we didn't really have a lot of stuff to fill the large space. On the other hand, the game required some space to play, so I guess the solution would have been to put more time into filling the scene overall... though that was hard due to it's size.
